When To Trim? April 21, 2026 A brush fringe or a bristle, a braid or piping—the world of trims can add another dimension to any interior. A design detail our team use to introduce texture, luxury and visual interest to a space, here are a few trim rules we swear by: Every scheme can be elevated by a trim It’s true. Whether it’s simple contrast piping around an armchair, pom pom or flat braid along a curtain edge or brushed fringing around a cushion edge or adding interest to an upholstered footstool with contrast detailing along the base, trims are where the magic happens. We’re seeing clients gravitate more and more towards plain fabrics for curtains and blinds. In this case, we work with trims along edges and borders, from the simple to the ornate, the textured to the highly decorative, to help add contrast and ultimately elevate the scheme. Find your trim heroes Samuel & Sons are our trim go-to – a brilliantly creative design house offering everything from simple, understated flat braids to more elaborate indoor and outdoor trims. We turn to them for refined, pared-back details, and rich, luxury finishes, perfect for curtain edges, cushions, chairs and headboards. We’re particularly drawn to their collaborations – a recent favourite with Martin Brudnizki is inspired by the romanticism and artistry of the Pre-Raphaelites. Showcasing beautifully embroidered silk trims, we look forward to using. Another essential is Houlès, a French brand whose trims feature in many of our projects—from Corsican inspired braids to plush jumbo pom pots, this is frivolous French style at its best, adding a quiet touch of luxury. Be led by trim trends The designers we look to regularly update their collections with on-trend designs that are easy to integrate into contemporary schemes. At the moment, we’re seeing a resurgence of brush fringes, ombréd trims and wave piping—each bringing movement and playfulness to otherwise simple designs. Trims as art When you’re adding something extra to a scheme, approach it as you would a piece of art. Choose something that resonates with you and complements the space. Trims have the ability to lift a scheme—they can introduce colour, texture and personality. From ornate shell emboirdery to beaded dragonflies and fluffy llama designs, The key is to select something that helps create the atmosphere you want to live in and enjoy. Find your trim entry point If a statement headboard trim (one of our studio favourites) feels too bold, start smaller, with something like a cushion. Christopher Farr Cloth offers beautifully crafted, multi-coloured braided trims featured on their ready-to-buy cushions. This is a simple way to experiment: pair a plain fabric with a decorative trim and build confidence without committing to a larger design feature. For example a simple roman blind could take on a tailored bespoke look with a U-Shaped border trim along the sides and bottom. Most of all, enjoy trim life The possibilities are endless. Once you begin incorporating trims into your interiors and upholstery, it’s rewarding to see how these small details transform a project. We’re currently working with some exceptional trims for bespoke upholstered headboards, footstools and chair bases in upcoming schemes. These are the details that truly bring a space to life—we hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do. Share this: Back to all articles
